Unyielding in the arms of eternity
Forgotten place once glimpsed in a dream
Imprisoned now in a vacuum abandoned by time.
Mirror world where no light ever shines.
If this is this the end, where are we going?
Who is this who walks in my footfalls?
Who, soundless, calls my name
across the vastness of the immaterial plane?
Broken leaves underfoot, imprinted in the snow:
A fleeting memory of the past.
Pagan. Otherworld.
Lamenting a future that never was

Celestial Mirage

He lay in a ditch, alone; the nameless man; staring upwards
at the sky as though searching for something lost.
A bird, or perhaps the shape of a cloud
that bore the likeness of home. Or a place so distant
as beyond reach. An echo lost along the airy way.
By the close of day, the soul was gone,
Leaving behind a body riddled with bullets.
Shrapnel. A still smile on cold lips.
And the sun setting in the blood
as it sets in the sky each night.
An insect playing on the skin.
Drawn to the aroma and the fascination of death:
taking life from it. And the celestial mirage of his homeland
Breaking apart in the sky like a slum borne into the tendrils of an airstrike.
And all things vanished now. All things quite silent.

Two Score and Ten Souls

Comes the noon. Then the fading light.
Gaze blankly into death, all ye who have fallen.
The blood in the lungs rising chokes out the life inside.
Spills from the throat and
makes a rivulet of the aisle. A heart beat stops.
Who goes there? Who walks amongst this carnage?
Who hears the doors slam shut, swing open, close, protest
beneath the passing breeze of a summer’s day forever lost?
Two score and ten souls held hostage by time.
Who dared to worship here, only knowing of the past:
never seeing what would be?
What hate drew this line in the sand that could never be crossed,
Never be touched but by a god that did not exist.
How can we ever go back? How can we ever come home?
There is nobody there anymore.

Severed lies the thread of life;
Freed from the dangling thorns
We freefall into frozen waters; swallowed by the torrential maw,
Vomited forth as one reborn on antediluvian shores.
Lost and without hope.
But our eyes are open now. We divine the arc of heaven
A dreamscape woven with the entrails of a nightmare,
Bound thickly with the blood of ages beyond.
Immemorial. Inescapable.
And I must watch alone from behind the veil
No land to call my home. No body to call my own.

The wind cries when the world opens up.
And the earth sprays forth its lifeblood
like an infant torn from the womb.
Laid out along the bloodied ground.
For what is left of us but the memory of what once was?
No solace for us now. Our words betray us.
They leak from the shadow of the woods
Amid the patter of distant gunfire.
The lullaby of endless war turning our dreams
into nightmares. Recasting our flesh into blackened earth
Scorched by the furnace of the eschaton.
